Move aside, Mom and Dad! Your kids are going to write some amazing letters!
The art of letter writing may seem like a lost art, but I’m here to tell you that all it takes is a little encouragement and the right road map to get kids writing some amazing letters.
Do you ever get your kids to check the mail with you? Do you see their eyes light up when they see an envelope with their name on it?
OR, are you an auntie/uncle/grandma/grandpa whose heart fills with happiness when they see something addressed to them that’s NOT a bill or junk mail?
Since writing is an essential skill they are getting taught in school, why not give them real-life practise at home with some fun tools?
But first, why is letter writing a great exercise for kids?
As this article says so well from readingrockets.org, “Encouraging children to write letters from an early age will improve their communication, social and handwriting skill.” It’s a triple-whammy for improving their writing!
With all the digital conveniences these days, proper communication is lacking. We love to email and depend more and more on texting but sometimes this leads to miscommunication and frustration. We are often stuck with presuming details or misreading ideas because we just aren’t communicating properly.
One thing I love about kids writing letters is that they have to actually consider how they themselves are doing!
When kids write letters it is an expression of themselves plus a check-in with their own mental health.
They get to express themselves by writing how they would have a conversation with someone. I have said in my printable- ” It’s OKAY to write how you talk!”
And with an emphasis on not being afraid to make mistakes, kids will be able to work through their feelings by being able to put words to them. (So important during this strange and sometimes scary time of isolation and global quarantine!)
